If you have oily acne prone skin, then this guide is for you!  While oily skin does have its benefits like giving your skin a glow, we know that have oily skin and acne can be a headache.

1. Cleanse Twice A Day

Cleanse in the morning, and in the evening before bed.  A study shows that cleansing twice a day works better over once a day cleansing if you have acne prone skin too.

Use a foaming, or gel type cleanser that lathers up instead of a lotion type cleanser to help remove excess oils if you have oily skin.   You don’t need to be very aggressive, too harsh of a cleanser leaving your skin feeling stripped isn’t good for oily skin in the long run.

Another tip is to change your pillowcase and sheets regularly too to prevent build up and help your skin remain clear from acne.

2. Apply treatment if needed

If you have oily skin and acne, you may want to apply a product designed to help reduce acne such as retinol.   Most acne treatments can be quite drying to the skin too. Retinol can also reduce sebum production and oily skin with consistent use.

3. Exfoliate with Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is a great alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the uppermost layer of skin.  It can also go deep into the pores to remove excess oil or sebum which will help skin look less oily plus offers other skin benefits like reducing hyperpigmentation, reducing acne, and stimulating collagen.

Make sure you don’t over exfoliate, so you can either use a toner container glycolic acid a couple times a week, or our favorite is to use a Pumpkin Enzyme Masque with glycolic acid 1-2 times a week.

4. Apply Moisturizer

It seems counterintuitive, however oily skin needs moisturizer too! Skin that is dehydrated meaning if skin doesn’t have enough water, it can result in a compromised skin moisture barrier which can cause more acne and sensitized skin.

Look for a moisturizer that is lightweight, gel based, or water based as those would be best suited for oily skin.

Some ingredients in moisturizers that also control oil production include niacinamide, green tea, and centella asiatic which is also known as gotu kola.

Recommend Banish Fighter Gel

5. Sunscreen

Finish off your morning routine with a sunscreen to protect your skin and hard work.

Sun exposure itself can also cause oily skin too and increase sebum production.

When looking for a sunscreen, some mineral sunscreens can work well for oily skin as the minerals may absorb oils.  Again, look for something lightweight and with non pore clogging ingredients.

We recommend The Defender sunscreen as it has a light texture and doesn’t feel heavy or oily at all.
